Fisherman Vs. Surfers
If you went on SurfJaxPier today then you might have seen the “Fisherman Vs. Surfer” story by Mitch Kaufman. Both Mitch and myself agree that the City of Jacksonville Beach should address the Fisherman and not the Surfers. Unfortunately that might not be the case.
The old pier had a 300′ foot ordinance in place, where no surfer could surf within 300′ feet of the pier. This was to keep surfers from being hooked or knocked out by a sinker weight. The crappy thing about this is that all the good wedge peaks are within 300′ feet of the pier! The fisherman and current Pier Manager want this ordinance to be put back into place. Not me.
I think all the local surfers should ban together and suggest a ordinance for the fisherman to follow. No casting in the first 1000 ft. of the pier. It makes no sense that the fisherman need to cast right into the impact zone, but instead could cast further out in deeper waters.
Here is a link to the “Action News” site with a story on the matter. I have been quoted in the writing and I am in the video clip, that can be found on the right side of the page.
